The life shift

We're in the process of writing a new Life Squared publication - possibly the first in a short series.

It's clear to us that if we want people to change their lifestyles to live within the parameters of one planet, we need to have a fundamental shift in the way we think about basic things - from food to the things we spend our time and money on.

Coming soon - How to be the change

We live in difficult times. Many people have been dismayed by the rise of right wing parties and right wing ideas in western democracies recently, with greed, xenophobia, sexism, and environmental damage just some of the unpleasant freight they carry with them. This is on top of a political system that was already strongly leaning to the centre right in the first place.

Being a friend to yourself

One day last week, I was having a bad day.  I was feeling moody, not looking at my best (couldn’t be bothered to shave) and generally not wanting to engage with anything or anyone.  Essentially I was trying to get through to the end of the day without effort - on autopilot.

How can I help?

Like us, you may have been inspired this week by the wonderful example of triathlete Alistair Brownlee, who sacrificed his second place finish in the final race of the World Triathlon Series, to help his brother Jonny over the finishing line, who had been suffering from the effects of heat and exhaustion.

This example comes at a highly appropriate time for us at Life Squared, as we're currently developing our next publication, which explores what would happen if we lived our lives trying to be of service to each other.

New guide - 'How to be civilised'

Several months ago, when we began writing the new Life Squared publication ‘How to be civilised’ - which we’re launching today - we had no idea how relevant some of the lessons would be to some of the major news stories of the day.

The booklet (available here to download free) examines some of the lessons that we can draw from the Holocaust for our own lives in the modern world.

Why we need to promote civility

Here are a couple of extracts from the new Life Squared booklet 'How to be civilised', which comes out next week. When we began writing it, we had no idea how relevant some of the lessons would be to the turbulent times we’re living in.  Here are a couple of extracts that feel appropriate today.

Best career advice ever

We came across this quote from a business school professor and, to our minds, it's really the only career advice you need - whatever stage you're at in your career:

Ask yourself, what is the one thing in the world you would do if you knew that you wouldn’t fail? And then just go do that. Do what you want to do, do what you’re passionate about, don’t worry so much about the risk.

What do you think?

At the start of this year, we launched our new website - we think it is simpler and easier to use, but we didn't revamp it for our own use - it's for you!

So, we'd really love to hear what you think about the new site, about Life Squared in general and any suggestions you may have.  Please do get in touch via info [at] lifesquared.org.uk - we'd genuinely like to hear what you think!  Many thanks - the Life Squared team.

Advice for life

Some sage advice for life from Hungarian dissident George Konrad, via Christopher Hitchens' indispensable 'Letters to a Young Contrarian':

"Have a lived life instead of a career. Put yourself in the safekeeping of good taste. Lived freedom will compensate you for a few losses....If you don't like the style of others, cultivate your own. Get to know the tricks of reproduction, be a self-publisher even in conversation, and then the joy of working can fill your days."

We've had a facelift!

We're proud to introduce our new, improved website!

We know lots of people love our content and publications so we haven't changed these, but we wanted to make it easier to see all the content we have available on the website and access the content you need.  We hope the latest revamp has achieved this - and made the website more attractive too!

Please have a look around and let us know what you think - we'd love to hear from you - info@lifesquared.org.uk.
